"Should we redesign or rebuild?" is one of the most common — and most miscalculated — decisions in web projects. Here's the framework we use with clients.
The question behind the question
The real question isn't "redesign vs rebuild" — it's "what's broken, and what's working?" Get clear on that and the answer becomes obvious.
When a redesign is the right call
- Brand and copy are still accurate.
- You have meaningful organic traffic worth preserving.
- The CMS is solid and scales with your team.
- The structure works — design just feels dated.
When you need a brand-new site
- Your offer or audience has fundamentally shifted.
- The codebase is fragile, slow, or impossible to update.
- You're rebranding or repositioning.
- SEO is already weak — there's nothing to protect.
Protecting SEO either way
Whichever path you take: audit current rankings, map old URLs to new ones with 301 redirects, preserve title tags and on-page copy for top pages, and resubmit your sitemap on launch day.
The 60-second decision matrix
If 3+ of these are true, rebuild. Otherwise redesign:
- Site is more than 5 years old with no major updates
- Mobile experience is broken
- You can't easily edit pages yourself
- Page speed is over 4 seconds on mobile
- Your offer has changed in the last 18 months
